Whenever accidents occur, you contact your insurance company to file a claim. Many people fear the whole process and the paperwork that may be involved in filing claims. But that is not the case. Filing insurance claims is not that difficult if you follow the proper steps. Here are few tips that can help you in filing claims and make the job easy for you.

  1. Know your policy: Understand your insurance policy and make sure you know what the policy covers and the exclusions. If you are not sure whether the accident is covered under the policy, ask your insurance agent.
  2. File your claim quickly: File your insurance claim as soon as possible. Call your agent and seek his/her help in speeding up the process. Also be honest regarding the information you provide for the claim.
  3. Temporary repairs: When your home is damaged, make some emergency repairs to avoid any further damage to your home. Keep a record of all the expenses for temporary repairs and other expenses as they may be covered under the policy.
  4. Get an estimate on the claim:  It is advisable to get an estimate regarding the repairs for any damage to house or car. If the estimate is from a reliable source, the adjuster may approve the claim pretty fast.
  5. Copy of police report: If you are involved in car accident, you will need to file a police report. Keep a copy of the report with you. Make sure you have the details of the other driver involved in the accident- name, insurance coverage, driver’s license number etc. Also maintain your cool and do not discuss anyone's fault at the scene as it could jeopardize your insurance coverage.
  6. Avoid hiring lawyer: Lawyers are hired in case of serious accidents. If you hire lawyer, your agent, insurance company and adjuster will have to communicate with him. In case you are sued for a liability insurance, your insurance company will provide you a lawyer.

Many people are ignorant about the whole insurance process and may fail to get the right amount of claim. If you do your part in the claiming process, you will be able to get benefits for your loss.
